New Crowdfunding Site Helps Pet Rescues

by Sarah Woodard

Thanks to the loving care of animal rescue organization workers and volunteers, Bart the Dumpster Dog had a safe place to stay before he found his furever home. PoundWishes hopes to give this same happy ending to all pets who wind up in a shelter. PoundWishes is a new crowdfunding site specifically for animals in shelters and rescues. The site connects 100 million potential donors around the country with the 7.6 million pets that enter shelters and rescues every year — both to facilitate adoptions, but also to help raise funds for the costly medical care that shelters struggle to find funding for.  The site hopes to expand the number of shelters and rescues signed up, from 650 by the end of 2016, to 3,500 in 2017, and over 6,000 by 2018.

Across the country, pet rescues receive 7.6 million animals annually. Dogs like Bart are lucky enough to be rehomed with loving families. Sadly, not all pet rescue groups have the funding or space necessary to care for the animals they receive, resulting in nearly 2.7 million unnecessary euthanizations each year.
