Matilda’s 15th birthday party tomorrow!

Matilda at home at The Algonquin Hotel

I know, this is a blog for dogs so why would I be writing about a cat’s birthday party? Well this one is super special because it’s a huge benefit for the North Shore Animal League and that helps all pets!

NYC’s The Algonquin Hotel has a resident feline named Matilda.  Every year the property throws her an above-and-beyond birthday party as a way to help out the North Shore Animal League and hopefully find some animals a home during the charity’s on-site adoption that morning.  Anyone can go for a $25 donation to North Shore. This year’s event is being held tomorrow starting at 3PM with the adoption event and birthday party at 5PM. [click to continue…]

Should mommy tell the lady not to leave her dog in the car?

By Bart on Monday, August 9th, 2010 in Uncategorized

Mommy saw a lady leave her poodle in her van yesterday when it was 89 degrees outside. She was going to say something but the lady went back to her car about 10 minutes later. What do you think…should Mommy have said something right away?

A lot of people don’t know that heat stroke can happen in a car for a dog in as little as 10 MINUTES. On an 88 degree day, it will be 104 inside the car even with four windows cracked.  The Humane Society of the United States says NEVER leave a dog in the car even for  few minutes. We can get really sick really fast!

My Dog Is Cool

If you’re super furry like me it’s hot no matter where you are, but in a car it gets hot right away. Here’s a graph from Mydogiscool.com to show you how hot it gets. They also have posters you can leave on the windshield if you see a dog in a car, and they tell you what to do if the dog looks sick!

Living with kitties

By Jinx on Friday, August 6th, 2010 in Kitty Korner

Jinx the cat

Dogs and cats aren’t known for being best friends, and that’s somewhat true in our household. I’m Jinx and I’m the older sister of Riley, Ripley and Prestley. With three dogs in our house (male ones at that), I’m outnumbered by canines of the opposite gender.  I love my brothers even if I don’t like to be around them all of the time and that’s because our house has been setup to make us all as comfortable as possible. Here are a few things that mommy did to make sure that I wouldn’t feel unsafe with three dogs introduced overtime into our house.

  1. Make gradual introductions – like one of the dogs said about introducing a new puppy to other dogs in another post, each dog was introduced gradually to me. No one forced me to go make friends as soon as a puppy came home. Baby gates were used to give me space, and I was able to go explore them when I was ready.
  2. Taught “leave it” – this is one of Mommy’s favorite commands for the dogs in general, but she uses it when they’re tempted to chase me.  It works with food, toys and garbage when walking as well. Mommy knows you can’t train a cat; we’ll do what we want, so this helps keep things under control between us since she’s worked with the dogs!
  3. Provide neutral territory – we tend to clash more inside the house, but when we all go out into the backyard together the dogs don’t try to chase me at all. We just enjoy the space together! Since our backyard is fenced, it’s a safe spot for us all to go!
  4. Create personal space – the dogs are together all of the time, but I don’t always want to be with them. They like to play with each other a lot and when they’re hyper, I try to stay out of the way because I don’t want to get involved. There’s a baby gate at the bottom of our basement stairs so I can go somewhere the dogs can’t go if I want some time to myself. It keeps them away from my litter box and food, too. By doing this, I see them when I’m ready to and I come up when they’re calm and quiet.

There is one thing that mommy says she would do differently if we could start over, and that would be to get a cat at the same time as a dog or after

wards (particularly if it were a kitten). A young cat has more patience for getting to know dogs!

Seattle Humane Society offers tips on noisy events and pets

By on Thursday, August 5th, 2010 in Uncategorized

It’s not only Fourth of July fireworks that scare pets. Lots of events have loud noises that can really freak us out. Seattle’s Humane Society sent us some great tips for our mommies and daddies to keep us calm when there’s scary things flying overhead…like the Blue Angels! (They’re not really angels, they’re super loud flying things.)

Tips from the Seattle Humane Society:

The Blue Angels roaring in our skies at Seafair may be a captivating event for humans, but the loud noise can be hard on our companion animals. With a little planning, you can keep your pets calm and safe at home. The squadron will take to the local skies Thursday for practice flights, and Friday through Sunday for the Boeing Air Show at Seafair. [click to continue…]

Grooming tips from Riley

By Riley on Sunday, August 1st, 2010 in Uncategorized

If you find yourself exploring the aisles of any big box pet store, you’ll find an endless number of pet care products. Tell someone who works there that you just got a new dog, and you may walk out with a cartload of items that you’re just not sure you’ll need or use. As a new pet owner, if you haven’t done your research, it’s hard to know what you actually need, versus what might come in handy depending upon your dog’s health and specific needs. Adding a new dog to your home

By Prestley on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 in Uncategorized

Hi, I’m Prestley and I’m the third dog in my house. I couldn’t have a more loving home, but getting me was a careful decision that mommy and daddy made. Bringing me home, they also took some steps to make sure that I would be accepted in the home and that my brothers would get used to me without them becoming too jealous or me becoming too overwhelmed.

Here's me snuggling with my new brothers

Since I was so tiny, at only 1.5lbs when I came home, mommy was even more careful introducing me into the home. Ripley, the smaller of my brothers was over 10 times my size then so she was worried that we’d start playing too roughly and I would get hurt. It was nice of her to think about me that way, but doesn’t she know that I’m tough? [click to continue…]

Should you get more dogs?

By Riley Hodgson on Sunday, July 18th, 2010 in Uncategorized

Talk to pet lovers and you’ll find many of them just can’t help themselves; they keep bringing more animals home. This happened in my house. When mommy got me (Riley), it was just me and our cat, Jinx. Then before I was a year old, we got Roxie and when she passed away after only three months with us, Ripley joined our home. Prestley is now the latest addition and he makes the third dog under the age of three at home.

Introducing Riley, Ripley and Prestley!

By The Dogs on Thursday, July 15th, 2010 in Uncategorized

In a home that contains far more pets than people, there are three small dogs all under 40lbs who couldn’t be more different. What they do have

in common is their love for their family, each other and even their cat sister that they so love to terrify. Riley, Ripley and Prestley are these three little dogs were talking about. You’ll be seeing a lot of them on here so it’s time you get acquainted with who they are and what they like -  and dislike. They might even reveal a few secrets about mom’s training struggles. Follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook too!

Riley the Puggle

I’m Riley and my mommy will tell you that I’m not easy, or at least I wasn’t for the first few years I was alive. Like all puggles I’m hyper. I also have what mommy says might be the only case of doggie anxiety and OCD in the world. I like to think that it’s just because I like my life the way it is and that time when I kept taking the new cushions off the couch mommy always likes to tell everyone? Well, don’t tell her, but it’s just that I don’t think they looked very good on the couch. I love to cuddle, eat, run, and if you leave something on the floor, even if it’s my toy, I will pull it apart. I’m the biggest and the oldest at 3 years old and about 35 lbs but my little brothers tend to pick on me. I just don’t like confrontation!

We're Riley and Ripley!

Ripley the Shih Tzu/King Charles Spaniel

I’m Ripley and Riley is right…sometimes we do like to bully him but only because he lets us. Want to know what my favorite thing is? Well, I love to wear clothes. Mommy said she wouldn’t ever dress up her dogs, but when I was a puppy she bought me a sweater and jacket, and I started to get upset when she took it off. Now I have a whole wardrobe of shirts, sweaters and coats. Except my new little brother Prestley keeps chewing them. I have a favorite ball, and I like to play fetch myself by rolling it off the couch and chasing it. I love to lick and never get it when mommy yells at me to stop…I just love her!

Prestley the Yorkie/Bichon

I’m Prestley and I’m the newest in the house. I’m so little that mommy and daddy have started calling me “Little” as a nickname. I look just like a yorkie and like that I get lots of attention when I’m in public. I have stairs to get up onto the couch and bed because mommy says she got tired of me barking for her elevator service. When I’m affectionate my ears pin back. Mommy says she’ll never spoil me like a little dog but I think I can work the system.

Hi I'm Prestley!
